Down To Earth Landscapers

Down To Earth Gardening does excellent work. The gardens speak for themselves. But the website had become a source of friction rather than a business asset — difficult to update, reliant on external developer support for even routine changes, and increasingly problematic from a security and SEO standpoint.

This is a situation we encounter fairly regularly with businesses that built on WordPress several years ago. The platform has real strengths, but for a sole operator or small team running a service business, the ongoing maintenance overhead can quietly become significant. Updates get deferred. Content goes stale. The site starts to feel like a liability rather than a tool.

The goal here was straightforward: rebuild the site on a platform the client could actually own and manage, without sacrificing the quality of presentation their work deserved.

Platform decision

Moving from WordPress to Squarespace was the right call for this particular brief. The business needed a platform that was genuinely intuitive to manage day-to-day — adding new project photography, updating service information, keeping content current — without requiring developer involvement every time something needed to change.

Squarespace handles the technical maintenance in the background: security updates, SSL, hosting. For a business like Down To Earth Gardening, that's not a small thing. It removes an entire layer of ongoing complexity and cost, and means the website stays healthy without requiring active management of the infrastructure beneath it.

The design

Landscaping and gardening businesses live or die on their portfolio. The quality of the work has to be immediately apparent — not buried in text or competing with a cluttered layout. The new site was designed around that priority: clean, image-led and structured to let the photography do its job.

The enquiry flow received particular attention. A service business website has one primary commercial purpose — getting prospective clients to make contact — and the structure of the site was built to support that as clearly as possible. Every page considers what a visitor needs to see and what we want them to do next, without making that logic feel mechanical or obvious.

The result is a site that feels considered rather than functional, even though the functionality was the starting point.

Words from the client

Sarah is very encouraging and professional, everything about upcoming process was explained clearly. Just being able to simply update our website has been a massive jump forward for us. We now need to now promote it and tie in with our social media!

The logo refinement

Alongside the website, the existing logo was lightly refined to sit more naturally within the new digital identity. This kind of light-touch work is often undervalued but makes a meaningful difference to the overall coherence of a brand's presentation. A logo designed for an older context doesn't always translate cleanly into a new one — small adjustments to weight, proportion or colour can bring everything into better alignment without the disruption of a full redesign.

The refinement kept everything recognisable while giving the visual identity a stronger, more consistent foundation across digital and print applications.

What the client gained

Greater independence is the practical headline. Down To Earth Gardening can now update their portfolio, add new project imagery and manage their content without external support. That independence has real value — in time, in cost and in the ability to keep the site current as the business grows.

The improved SEO structure gives the business better foundations for visibility across Edinburgh, East Lothian and the wider Scottish market — supporting longer-term growth as well as day-to-day enquiry.

The site is modern, easy to maintain and built to represent the quality of the work behind it. For a business that had been held back by its digital presence, that's a meaningful shift.
